Barb’s Oil Painting Tips
In painting BR paintings, it is best to use BR paints (landscape) (floral) to get the same results as Bob Ross and Barb.
In other styles of paintings, Barb uses Winsor & Newton Winton oil colors, Winsor & Newton Artist's oil colors, Graham, and/or Grumbacher Pre-tested - mainly to get the color desired. In a painting, she might use 2 or three different brands of paints.
I like to wash brushes at the end of the day or class so I might own more than one brush of any brush….ask me if you want and I will tell ya if you might want to buy more brushes of any type. I want my students to buy what they need, not to buy more than needed.
For all paintings, small or large BR knife (mtns small knife is best)
Favorite brushes
BR paintings I don’t use a lot of 2 in landscape brushes too much anymore, maybe use for softing clouds. And I and my students seem to like the #3 fan brush more than the large fan.
I use a lot of 1 in landscapes brushes, I think I own about 10-15 of them but up to 4 would be great for most students, less washing of the brushes. Liner for all classes. Barb’s magic brushes
For florals, I use the ½ in floral flat brush, I really like this type of hair brush and it is a hard one to find in other brands. I really don’t use the ¾ floral too much, it is just too big for most paintings we do in classes. Now on the bigger canvas, 18 x 24 and up, it is a good brush but in my classes we mainly paint on 16 x 20 or smaller.
For wildlife/pet portraits, I use the floral brushes, landscape brushes, fan sometimes, most of the BR wildlife brushes, the flats #6 and #8. Keep in mind with wildlife and pets sometimes a super old brush is great to paint with. Also when painting these in class, you will need to basecoat your canvas with BR gray gesso, please use a large foam brush to paint with, not your BR brushes. I have had many students try that. Also if you happen to wreck a brush, before tossing it out, bring it to me and I will try to fix it for you. I have saved 3 1 in landscape brushes so far…..
Non-BR seascapes, for these I have really worked to find brushes that you can find in the area. But remember sometimes the cheaper brushes just don’t do the work as good. But sometimes it does better, like Barb using her own magic brushes in some paintings. Just ask her to show you the magic brushes and then you can get your own. She will give you one free and then you have to buy more at Michaels or where ever. NEW, Joyce Ortner has her new signature brushes on her website, http://www.joyceortner.com/products.asp I love her own magic brush, just got some of the new brushes in for me to use..
Another tip on the non BR seascapes, it is best to paint the basic painting 2 times, now in classes we can’t do that but I do want you to keep that in mind. I paint the sky, fog bank, some clouds, basic water with waves, eye of wave, baseline of wave, foam, land or rocks, with basic water action, beach area. Let dry over night or as long as wanted and then paint over all again and then add the fine details, more clouds, water movements, water lines, layers of foam, remember to keep the brightness area below the sun/moon area.
Still having lots of issues painting….I do a few private one on one classes only as I have time, cost at this time is $50 for a 3-4 hour class and with a gas fee based from Hermiston….just call or email (bfurlong@charter.net) for cost to your home.
Supplies that Barb can sell you…may need to order…. Large plastic palettes $25 Student easels $50 I can get other stuff for ya but these are what I mainly get in, shipping extra.
If it says on the website a black gesso canvas is used for the class, you may bring a white Michaels or Fredix canvas in to trade for a black one, it would be nice if you give Barb a $1 or two for the service but we have been trying to do that just to help students. You may paint your own canvas and if you are doing a different size you must do yours. I like to do thes a day before or the morning before and all of the ones I do are painted two times with the black gesso.
Want to add your tips, just email Barb and she will post them.
